Model Forecast Lows…Next 3 Mornings
I posted the Frost and Freeze Advisories for Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma earlier. The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning while the models say temps in this area will stay above freezing.
There is a very good rule of thumb in forecasting that on evenings where winds go calm or very light, the Low Temperature will drop to or close to the Dew Point. There is an area centered around Elkhart and Liberal that dew points are at or below 32F. Thus the NWS went with a freeze warning.
Model Forecasts for the next 3 mornings… Sunday morning the NAM Model has temperatures in the Mid 30s for both Elkhart and Liberal. There are freezing temps just to the west at Raton,NM but that city is at 6500ft. The white line is 40F. Anything lower than 40 has a threat for frost especially in drainage areas of river valleys. That frost threat goes as far south as Lubbock.
Nonday AM… The Frost threat goes all the way to the Red River in Oklahoma. Freezing temps will be in Nebraska and Northern Kansas.
Tuesday AM…. The cold air shifts farher east into Iowa and Missouri. The frost threat also moves out od western Kansas, western Oklahoma and West Texas.
I have brought my tropicals in and have blankets ready for my tomato plants. This will be a Freeze/Frozt that can be surviveable by victory gardens with a few precautions.
